The Nature Conservancy Pavilion

February 1st, 2009

Welcome to one of the most beautiful and challenging building sites in all of Bath County. We have constructed an overhead cable system in order to transport all of our building materials to the pavilion location. Jeff has made a seemingly impossible task all too easy. We now have the foundation piers in place and will await warmer weather to install the stone veneer and begin erection of the timber frame.

Warmer weather has finally allowed us to install some stone on the piers. Lowry Masonry and Construction has been patient with Mother Nature and is almost finished with the stone work which will allow us to move forward with the timber frame of the new pavillion.

Progress is being made once again atop Warm Springs Mountain. Jeff Lowry and his crew have completed the pier foundation, using only stone harvested from near the building site, and have now turned over the ridge top to master timber framer, Bob Smith. Bob, who owns Beardance Joinery in Lexington, VA, has been constructing timber structures all along the East coast for many years. We are honored to have Bob contribute his exceptional talent to this project.

Please view the photos of our progress on Warm Springs Mountain. The timber frame has been dry-fit and is awaiting a day of good weather for the raising. The flooring should be completed just in time.

Our project atop Flag Rock on Warm Springs Mountain is now complete. We would like to give special thanks to the following people for their efforts in overcoming the challenges of this location and making the new viewing pavilion a reality:

Jeff Young- For his vision and his labor involved in ensuring that all material made it safely to the top.

Chantry Combs, Jeremy Cole, and Todd Stinnett- For their construction of the high line cable transport system and their tireless effort in transporting tools and material to the site.

Jeff Lowry and staff- For the beautiful foundation stone work.

Bob Smith and staff- For their skillful fabrication and assembly of the locust timber frame, floor, walls, benches and roof.

I, Andrew Watkins, would also like to mention that it was here, at Flag Rock, that I fell in love with Bath County nearly 18 years ago. This spot is ever so special to me. I am exceptionally grateful to The Nature Conservancy for providing me the opportunity to assist Melissa Morrison with the design, and to oversee and contribute to the construction of this pavilion.
