MCWILLIAMS ADDITION AND REMODEL

January 2006

We have tied up nearly all loose ends on the garage apartment construction this month. Final inspection was conducted on the 20th of January and occupancy was granted. Still waiting on the weather so that we can complete the grout on the walkway stone work. Once we complete the grouting, we will be able to construct the roof over the walkway that will tie the main house to the garage; and once we complete that, we will be able to finish the siding on both the main house and the garage. Demolition of the main house interior is set to begin January 25th.

Wednesday the 25th was the day we began tearing out the interior of the main house. Nathan, Chanty and Ralph also spent some time helping move furniture into the garage apartment.

Tear out proceeded this week through the dining room, utility room, entry hall and master bedroom upstairs. Ralph spent time on Wednesday pouring footings under the kitchen area and laying block to prepare for the support of a new beam to be installed between the kitchen and the dining room.

This week was spent entirely in the kitchen area. Ralph, Chantry and Nathan worked to provide temporary support to the second floor over the kitchen. Once supported, they were able to lift the floor underneath the kitchen to its proper position. Then they installed solid support under the new beam bearing locations and proceeded on the construction and installation of the new beam that will allow us to open up the area between the kitchen and dining room.

Still more tearing out this week than putting back. Ralph, Nathan and Chantry worked on completing the 2nd floor tear out, and, with the weather turning warm for a few days, they got outside to continue work on the siding. Work was also completed on the structural beam framing between the kitchen and dining room.

February 20th - 24th

Ralph, Chantry and Nathan continued work Monday on the siding at the rear of the house. On Tuesday it was back inside for some more demolition. After our interior design meeting on Tuesday with Darrin Peterson, we realized more framing items needed to be removed; specifically the ceiling in the master bedroom and all of the walls in what will be the master bath. On Thursday, Ralph and Juston proceeded to remove what window and door units will be replaced and covered the openings with plastic.

Still not able to "pour it on" this week as we are still waiting on the interior design plan changes from Darrin Peterson. Ralph and Chantry continued on every bit of demolition and framing possible.

A little more demolition, another interior design meeting with Darrin Peterson, and a start on the master bath and bed framing were the accomplishments of the last two weeks. Nathan and Chantry were responsible for undertaking the new ceiling and wall framing as read from the revised floor plans.

It has been a while since our last post. We apologize. Nathan and Chantry have been working diligently on many of the framing details throughout the house: soffit and recess framing in the dining room, the new sitting room where the old porch used to be, expanded front door entry and new window framing in the master bedroom. On Thursday the 6th, Nathan, Chantry and Juston began removing the remainder of the siding and black paper around the old garage/ master bed to allow for the new windows, vents and siding. Thursday also saw the arrival of Kitchen Designworks, from Richmond, to verify the framing dimensions in the new kitchen.

The great weather this week made it very easy to work outside. Chantry, Nathan and David continued around the outside of the house tearing off siding, water damaged framing and installing the new window openings. Jason joined in on Wednesday and helped with framing the windows.
Lenny McElwee arrived on Wednesday as well to take measurements on replacing the flat roof above the entry, repairing the roof above the utility room and installing a new rubber roof over the walkway.
